PETALING JAYA: Indonesia and Malaysia have signed a deal to jointly produce the first Asean-made vehicle, Jakarta Post reports.

Under the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed in Jakarta yesterday, the Malaysian Automotive Institute (MAI) and the Indonesian Automotive Institute (IOI) will be in charge of running the venture.

They will work on improving the automotive manufacturing workforce and supply chains to produce vehicle components and establish a new brand.

They will have their own automotive component makers to realise the MoU through business-to-business cooperation, the daily said.

International Trade and Industry Minister Darrell Leiking signed the MoU, during a visit to follow up the meeting between Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad and President Joko Widodo in June.

Leiking said the deal was testimony to the strong bilateral economic relationship between Indonesia and Malaysia.

Indonesia is Malaysia’s seventh biggest trading partner.

MAI CEO Mohamad Madani Sahari said if Indonesia and Malaysia join forces, they were capable of creating vehicles with 90% of the components made locally.

The two countries will also look into the possibility of manufacturing cars that run on biodiesel, utilising palm oil.

“We will have more cooperation on research to advance our capabilities in creating electrical, hybrid vehicles,” Madani said.

Indonesian Industry Ministry’s director-general of resilience and development of international industrial access, Gusti Putu Suryawirawan, said at present there were 2,000 Indonesian and Malaysian automotive component makers.

He said the agreement sought to create multiple types of vehicles, including passenger cars, commercial and special-purpose vehicles.

“There are more than 640 million inhabitants in Asean. They will grow, and so will their purchasing power for vehicles. Therefore, we will do our best to supply that market,” said Putu.

In the first half of this year, Indonesia had shipped 1.5 million individual components for passenger and commercial vehicles to Malaysia.

Both countries will welcome other Asean members, especially Thailand, which is the region’s largest automotive producer, to join them.
