India's third missile missile test in two days shows technical maturity
Upbeat after the twin success of indigenously built medium-range, surface-to-surface missile Prithvi-II and its naval variant, Dhanush, test fired on Saturday, Indian scientists have raised the bar by successfully test firing the Agni-I missile on Sunday.
This was the third missile successfully test fired by India in the last two days. The successful test results are of immense significance because the security experts say that our missile technology may have just come of age.
Senior DRDO official told 8ak that with the successful testing of the 3,500km range Agni-III earlier this year and the testing of these missiles (Agni-I, Prithvi-II and Dhanush), they have managed to provide India with a credible missile system to safe guard its interests. He further added that now the focus would shift on development of 5,000 km range Agni-V, which it is expecting to test fire in 2011.
The 700km range Agni-I missile was test fired from a facility on Wheeler Island near Dhamra in the district of Bhadrak, 170 km from Orissa capital Bhubaneswar. The test was conducted by the Strategic Command with logistical support provided by DRDO.
The Agni-I has already been inducted into the armed forces. It is 15 metres tall and weighs 12 tonnes. It can carry nuclear payloads weighing up to one tonne. Developed under India's Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme, the missile was first tested in May 1989. India has also already inducted Agni-2 missile with a range of 2,500 km.
The naval variant of Prithvi, Dhanush can cruise up to 350 km. Prithvi is India's first indigenously built ballistic missile. It is one of the five missiles being developed under India's Integrated Guided Missile Development Program. Two versions of the missile have already been deployed with the army and the air force. Prithvi uses an advanced inertial guidance system with manoeuvring trajectory and can reach the target with accuracy of a few meters. It has a length of 9 meters with 1 meter diameter, defence sources said.
