Heavy Engineering grabs Bangladesh railway order

Heavy Engineering grabs Bangladesh railway order

Tapan Chakravorti / Kolkata/ Ranchi Jun 18, 2012, 00:02 IST

State-owned Heavy Engineering Corporation (HEC), Ranchi, has bagged the order for manufacturing machine tools for the modernisation of Saidpur railway workshop of Bangadesh Railway.

The order is significant as Bangladesh Railway is going for modernization of their railway workshop for the first time after British Rails had set up the railway infrastructure 140 years ago.

The work contract, for the order worth Rs 11 crore was signed recently in Dhaka by the director general of Bangadesh Railway, Md. Abu Taher and HEC’s Heavy Machine Tools Plant general manager G C Sinha.

HEC spokesperson said the export order from Bangladesh had given a major boost to HEC’s HMTP unit as it had become much dependent on India Railways for railways machine tools order.

He said that HEC might be benefited from Bangadesh assignment to get work orders from countries like Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Myanmar and Malaysia .

HEC also expects to get more orders from Bangladesh Railways in execution of infrastructure development projects.

Doesn't HEC Manufacture Steel Making Machinery and Heavy Industry Machine Tools??????Has It Diversified???????

"Modernization" with Indian machines doesn't make any sense but then again we are talking about sell out Awami dalals here.

Good news. Bangladesh is going in positive direction and doing well. Railway is an important service for common man and for large mass transfer of containers with relatively less price.

Great to see Indian firms are getting competitive around the world, atleast in south asia.

Deals with a sell out dalal gov doesn't make Indian firms competitive. Talk about competitiveness ones u get deals with countries like SL, PAK, Vietnam and other C.Asian countries. These junks will be useless after couple of years. Lets face it what can a country that imports their own machines from China provide us. Nothing but junk.

Well I agree that winning a contract in Bangladesh doesn't make Indian firms competitive coz there is very less competition. But how about winning in europe, where are compete with the best firms in the world.

Saidpur Workshop is well equipped. For instance, Pak Def Ministry had shortlisted this for manufacturing mortars. In 1980s this has been modernized under a Saudi finance. Indians may faint seeing how modern the facility is. Definitely some graft exercise involved to get HEC qualified for bids elsewhere.
