33 Tamil Nadu fishermen arrested by Sri Lankan Navy

Thirty three Tamil Nadu fishermen were arrested by Sri Lankan Navy in separate incidents while fishing near Katchatheevu, an islet in the Palk Strait, police and fisheries officials on Sunday said.

The arrest comes days after Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa ordered the release of all detained Indian fishermen in a goodwill gesture ahead of his visit to the swearing in of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 26.

Sri Lankan Navy personnel arrested four fishermen of Rameswaram on Sunday morning after they got stranded near Katchatheevu when their boat developed a technical snag, 'Q' branch police inspector Kennedy and Pamban fishermen organisation functionary U Arulanandam said. The fishermen and the boat have been taken to Talaimannar.

On the previous night, 29 fishermen from Rameswaram were arrested by the Lankan Navy near the same area. They were part of a group of fishermen, who set out in 727 boats from here, M Gopinath, Rameswaram Fisheries Assistant Director said.

They also seized six mechanised boats, he said, adding, the fishermen and the boats have been taken to Talaimannar.

in Pakistans case, a lot of them had to learn the hard way....

Sri Lankans have become pretty assertive too; they capture more indian fishermen than we do

Fish is fish where they go so will the fishermen

as long as your fishermen dont come into our waters - go right ahead! Fishing is quite therapeutic actually

doubt most of them have GPS they stray into areas where they believe they can catch the most fish, nothing will change they are just normal folk trying to make a living and will take a chance if they think they can get away with it.

so all South Asian countries should provide these very basic and not so expensive provisions to their people....if beggars in all of our countries can still have 3 cell phones, no reason why fishermens cant be provided basic garmin marine gps devices

its a lot cheaper in long run than arresting eachothers' fishermen - who are low wage earners - and then keeping them in prisons and feeding them prison rations....using them even as political tools

its a good past-time to bring friends together and enjoy freshly grill things....

Same goes for Pakistani fishermen, in Indian jails, does it not?

and same goes for indian fishermen in Pakistani jails..it works all ways (except we dont have beef with Sri Lankan fishermen given the distance, leave alone good relations)

but pipe down and review my above post

@Abu Zolfiqar even if they provided the equipment who is to say they still won't stray on purpose and go after the big catches? fish don't see territorial waters and the fishermen folk follow them because they are poor they need to make that catch otherwise how will they provide for their families? problem of over population will only lead to more arrest and disputes in the future. Until we strike a balance with nature I can see bigger problems than this.

Getting caught is far worse than not being able to catch the fish. There is a need of better coordination with the authorities.

Yeah but with overfishing what can the people do? the fishermen have no choice but to go after the fish wherever they may be it is a complicated issue and not just one that South Asians face but also there is disputes like this between European countries but difference is they do not arrest them.
