ICGS C-401 - The first in the series of L&T-Class Fast Interceptor Craft

RAMESWARAM: The Indian Coast Guard station at Mandapam got a shot in the arm when it received an interceptor boat on Friday.

Built at L&T yard in Chennai, the interceptor C-414 was commissioned in Goa on January 19, 2015.

With a length of 28 metre and 135 GRT (gross register tonnage), the boat can achieve the maximum speed of 45 knots.

"The interceptor is capable of undertaking multiple tasks such as surveillance, intercepting, search and rescue and helping small boats or crafts in distress at sea," Coast Guard commandant Harish More said.

The interceptor will be commanded by Deputy Commandant Bablu Kumar with a crew of 11 personnel on board and will operate under administrative and operational control of the commander of Coast Guard Region (East), according to Coast Guard sources.

In December last year, the Mandapam station got it first interceptor boat, C - 412.

We need to develop our own engines or at least ask Foreign engine makers to make in India

Kirloskar group license produces Marine engines in India, which are used in IN Ships, BHEL made Engines are also used.
 
We do develope our own diesel engines - Kirloskar Oil Engines Limited (KOEL) has been manufacturing indigenously made diesel engines for the last three decades.

Why isin't the L&T using these engines instead of the American one & cost should not be a factor in matters of national security

Well its like any other open tender process - the lowest bidder is declared the winner - Caterpillar Marine Power Systems won the contract from L&T back in 2010 to supply engines that will power some 36 interceptor boats, this one is the 12th one.

Coast Guard commissions four boats

The Indian Coast Guard today commissioned ICGS Ankit and three high-speed interceptor boats at Porbandar.

"ICGS (Indian Coast Guard Ship) Ankit and interceptor boats C-419, C-420 and C-155 were commissioned by Director General of the Indian Coast Guard Vice Admiral H C S Bisht at Porbandar today," an official statement said.

"This is part of ongoing efforts by the Indian Coast Guard to strengthen coastal security mechanism. It will also help to augment patrolling and prevent illicit activities such as infiltration, smuggling and illegal fishing," it added.

With the commissioning of these four ships, the force level of Coast Guard had increased to 116 ships and boats, said the statement.

ICGS Ankit, built by Cochin Shipyard Ltd, Kochi, is a 50 metres long Fast Patrol Vessel with 421 tons displacement which can achieve a maximum speed of 35 knots.

ICGS C-419 and C-420 are 27.8 metre long interceptor boats with 106 tons displacement. Built by Larsen & Toubro, these boats can achieve a maximum speed of 45 knots.

ICGS C-155, built by Bharati Shipyard Ltd, Mumbai is a 27.6 metres long interceptor Boat with 73 tons displacement and can achieve a maximum speed of 35 knots.

ICGS Ankit and C-419 will be based at Porbandar and Pipavav off Gujarat coast respectively, while C-420 and C-155 will be based at Karwar.


Commander of the Coast Guard in the Western Sea-board Additional Director General SPS Basra and North-West Region's Commander Inspector General Kuldip Singh Sheoran were also present at the commissioning ceremony.
