The IMF appointed Harvard professor Gita Gopinath as its next chief economist, making her the first woman appointed to the prestigious role.

Gopinath will replace Maurice Obstfeld, who announced in July that he’ll retire at the end of this year. The appointment comes as the Washington-based fund grapples with issues such as a surge in protectionism around the world and the impact of technology on employment.

“Gita is one of the world’s outstanding economists, with impeccable academic credentials, a proven track record of intellectual leadership, and extensive international experience,” IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde said in a statement.

Gopinath is the John Zwaanstra Professor of International Studies and of Economics at Harvard University. She’s co-editor of the American Economic Review and co-director of the International Finance and Macroeconomics Program at the National Bureau of Economic Research.

She is co-editor of the current Handbook of International Economics with Former IMF chief economist Kenneth Rogoff. She has written about 40 research articles on exchange rates, trade and investment, international financial crises, monetary policy, debt, and emerging market crises, according to the fund.

Gopinath was born and grew up in India and she received her doctorate in economics from Princeton University in 2001.

Don't know about the others, but it's the high time for Pak to ditch IMF forever....

Ruhumun senden İlahî, shudur anjak emeli:
De'mesin mabedimin gö'süne na-mahrem eli.

Oh glorious God, the sole wish of my pain-stricken heart is that,
No heathen's hand should ever touch the bosom of my sacred Temples.

A great new "bogey-woman" to galvanize the public to pay their taxes and fight corruption. Pakistan can't expect to count on the IMF any more, and many of our own friends have their own economic troubles to come to our rescue when our leaders behave irresponsibly with our money. Only Pakistan can solve Pakistan's own problems.

Not to be a fear monger, but if, Allah Forbid, Imran Khan fails to reform the society, will people rise up in the streets against any new civilian government?

Dw we will give you good rates, very good rates. How about LIBOR+6%?

West wants to counter our role in AIIB and NDB. Also, ADB cuz India have very good relations with Japan.

Anyway competition is good for India.

I agree, Thank God we have to accept relying on ourselves.
Also, Pakistan's population loves to fight "Epic" battles, and fighting the IMF with an Indian in the top ranks makes for a good narrative when you know you are just pay your taxes. This kind of marketing makes the harsh medicine go down a little easier with the masses. Not paying taxes will become tantamount to Treason or siding with the "Indian/IMF" Bogey monster enemy.
