Not really, many barriers to entry. FDA places a lot of restrictions. Drug makers, insurance companies, and doctors all collude for additional restrictions. USA imports a lot of drugs from India, Israel and the EU. No point in importing drugs if the price is inflated through conspiracy. Slap tariffs on them and make drugs in the USA using robots. It will be cheaper for the USA consumer.

The margins on generic drugs is very low as compared to the original ones. Americans don't like low margins. These cases are pushed by the local American companies as soon as they want to eliminate foreign competition. I have seen it first hand with my previous company.

The issue is being pushed by the masses and public officials. They are fed up with the price gouging. Many stories of drugs prices increasing over night with no real explanation other than profiteering. No point for USA to import drugs if foreign companies are conspiring to inflate prices.... especially generics. This issue will ramp up as the USA presidential election process starts.
