India to train 100 Sri Lankan student Navy officers

Apr 09, Colombo: Indian Navy will train 100 student officers of Sri Lanka Navy on an Indian Navy ship, Indian daily Hindustan Times reported today.

The move is aimed at strengthening the bilateral defence ties between the two countries, the report said.

"The student officers would be given exposure to various activities on board, including seamanship, Bridgeman ship, damage control, and fire fighting exercises during their stay," Hindustan Times quoted an Indian navy officer.

According to the Indian Navy officer, the training would be conducted on the tank landing ship INS Magar and the Sri Lankan student officers would embark on the ship at Trincomalee in eastern Sri Lanka on Monday.

We can not let Srilanka fall into the hands of China. While China is burning millions to build a airport and sea port in Hambantota in the south east coast of Srilanka to form a so called "pearl of string" to encircle India, the GoI is making diplomatic moves to counter China. Annual Military Aid from China in Sri Lanka had already reached US$ 500 Million, Chinese Military Aid also will Increase in the Future.

Currently China is the Largest Economic AND Military Partner of Sri Lanka.

Continuing with its policy to train the Sri Lankan armed forces, India is currently training 80-100 of its rookie naval officers on board INS Magar.

"Sri Lankan trainees are on amphibious warship, INS Magar, a medium landing ship tank, They are being trained in seamanship, bridgemanship, damage control, fire-fighting exercises and the like," said an official.

India has trained thousands of Sri Lankan armed force personnel at its military institutions ranging from the Counter-Insurgency and Jungle Warfare School at Vairengte (Mizoram) to the School of Artillery at Devlali (Maharashtra), apart from providing specialized naval courses in gunnery, navigation, communication and anti-submarine warfare.
