India aims to scrap its secretive Aviation Research Centre (ARC) after 53 years after officials decided it was no longer effective in providing adequate electronic and communications surveillance along the Pakistani and Chinese borders, sources said.
They said the ARC's aerial assets and specialists in cryptography, signals intelligence, and photo-reconnaissance would be divided between the National Technical Research Organisation (NTRO), a technical intelligence agency formed in 2004, and the Indian Air Force (IAF).
Some personnel were also likely to be absorbed by India's external Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), which presently handles the semi-autonomous ARC.
ARC platforms include Bombardier Global 5000 and General Dynamics Gulfstream III/SRA-1 jets, Russian Ilyushin Il-76 and Antonov An-32 transports, and licence-built Chetak (Aerospatiale Alouette III) and Cheetah (Aerospatiale SA-315) helicopters.
