India Monday test-fired its home grown nuclear-capable surface-to-surface Prithvi-II missile from a military base in Odisha, officials said.

The indigenously-developed ballistic missile with a range of 350 km was fired from the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur-on-sea in Balasore district, about 230 km from Bhubaneswar. The launch was carried out by the Indian armed forces, as part of regular training exercise, officials said.

Why is this liquid fueled old missile still being tested now that shourya and prahar are both available?

The Prithvi Development Team were called the "Funny Guys". When the first flight of Prithvi took place, they were congratulated by Dr.A.P.J.Abdul Kalam (who himself was working back then) with a banner "Funny Guys did it!".

Shaurya is too costly to be used except in in some special mission. Prahar is tested only once. The Prithvi with 1 ton payload with single digit accuracy is a nightmare for enemy. A lots of proposed targets falls in 350 KM area. With a payload of 1 ton, Prithvi can wipe out Military installation airports etc.

The only drawback of Prithvi is that they are slow compare to prahar and shaurya. Sofar as enemy do not have credible interceptor, Prithvi can do its Job perfectly and cost effectively.

Its slow, takes 1 hour to fuel and not as accurate.

There was a news that it is going to be tested. the Important news is 350 KM with 1 ton Pay load.

Prithvi-II missile is currently the mainstay of Strategic Forces Command (SFC) of the Indian Army. (Express photo | Hemant Rout) The stage is set for a fresh user trial of surface-to-surface medium range nuclear capable ballistic missile Prithvi-II. As part of training exercise, Indian Army will carry out the test on Monday.

Defence sources said the missile, which went into production after a series of test firings and its induction in the armed forces, will be test fired from the launching complex-III of the Integrated Test Range (ITR) located at Chandipur-on-sea, off the Odisha coast.

A defence official said this is a limited stock production (LSP) test by the Strategic Forces Command (SFC) of the Army. “If weather favours, the missile will be launched in between 9 am to 12 noon. Else the test may be deferred for Tuesday or Wednesday," he said.

The missile used for the test has been randomly selected from the production lot. The army personnel would gauge the efficiency and killing probability of the missile in a real time situation.

Prithvi is currently the mainstay of the SFC, along with the 700-km range Agni-I, 2000-km-plus range Agni-II and 3000-km range Agni-III ballistic missiles. Preparation for the test launch has been completed.

Last year the missile was test fired twice successfully. “DRDO claims that Prithvi is a proven missile, but still it has not performed as expected by the user. The missile has developed snags thrice in the resent past, which is why the army wants to carry out as many user trials to validate its performance in real time situations,” said a defence expert.

Prithvi, the first missile developed under Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP), has a length of 9 meters with 1 metre diameter thrusted by liquid propulsion twin engine. It uses Advanced Inertial Guidance System with maneouring trajectory and reaches the targets with few metre accuracy.

Prithvi-II, which has a strike range of nearly 350 km, uses an inertial guidance system with reasonably good accuracy and the warhead uses a radar correlation terminal guidance system. The missile has the capability to carry a payload of 1000 kg but if it is reduced by half, the striking range of the sleek missile could be enhanced.

Hey brother I have read many news and quotation form DRDO scientist that it hit the target with single digit accuracy. I do not agree with Accuracy part. Since this is an old missile, it carries an impression of being not very accurate. But guidance systems have evolved a lot since then.
