India starts shipping services from Pakistan
Move to benefit Pakistan by bringing down import, export costs
Staff Report
KARACHI: Shipping Corporation of India (SCI) has added Pakistan to its global network and will now be providing container liner services from Pakistan to Europe, the Mediterranean, Gulf, Far East and India.
SCI has appointed General Maritime (Pvt) Ltd (GML) as its agent to handle its business in Pakistan. The arrangement between SCI and GML is the result of the revised Pakistan-India Shipping Protocol signed in December 2006 between Federal Minister of Ports and Shipping Senator Babar Khan Ghauri and his Indian counterpart, superceding the earlier protocol dating from 1975. The protocol created an enabling environment that led to the liberalisation of maritime business between India and Pakistan and focuses on improving shipping services between the two countries on the basis of sovereign equality and mutual benefit.
The agreement between the two countries is a positive sign, which provides and facilitates new opportunities for trade. The advantages of SCI entry into Pakistani market will be increased competition, which will impact freight rates, and will bring down imports and exports costs. SCIs fast connections through the Mundra Port will reduce transit time and benefit Pakistani exporters and importers. The company also caters to bulk and break-bulk cargoes and over dimensional cargo across the globe. SCI and GML look forward to support from Pakistans industrial and trade sectors.
