India Sri Lanka fishing disputes need compromise – India

Foreign Secretary and US envoy designate Nirupama Rao speaking at a seminar said that disputes between India and Sri Lanka could be solved only if political compromise was arrived at. She did not spell out what the `compromises’ were to be. Rao made the remarks after inaugurating a two-day conference on fishing disputes organized by the Observer Research Foundation.

Observer Research Foundation (ORF) is a not-for-profit, multidisciplinary public policy think tank engaged in developing and discussing policy alternatives on a wide-range of issues of national and international significance. Some of ORF’s key areas of research include international relations, security affairs, politics and governance, resources management, economy and development.

The fundamental objective of ORF as stated by its office bearers is to influence formulation of policies for building a strong and prosperous India in a globalised world.

Set up in the early 1990s during the troubled period of India’s transition from a protected economy to its new engagement with the international economic order, ORF examines critical policy problems facing the country and helps develop coherent policy responses in a rapidly changing global environment.

“The exploitation of fisheries resources in such a situation can only be managed effectively by cooperation between the states concerned,” said Rao, adding “the issue of fisheries is definitely not a zero sum game” and that a solution can be found to the dispute.

India shares 7,500 km of coastline and maritime boundary with several neighbors including Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, the Maldives, Myanmar, Thailand and Indonesia.

Scholars and officials from India, Sri Lanka, Japan, Holland, Denmark and Australia took part in the conference.
