NEW DEHLI: India has rejected a call from the US to shun participation in gas talks with Iran, saying "energy security" is a priority for New Delhi.

Iran and Pakistan had signed a deal in March to construct a multi-billion dollar natural gas pipeline connecting the two neighboring countries — a project that was strongly opposed by the US.

The deal is part of the long-delayed $7.5 billion Iran-Pakistan-India (IPI) gas pipeline project.

Earlier, India has expressed its willingness to resume talks with Iran on the project.

China is also showing keen interest in investing $2.5 billion in the gas pipeline project in order to meet the country's energy demands.

India has called off the IPI gas pipeline not because of US insistence on Iran but due to lack of trust in pakistan to provide guaranteed security to the pipeline. It was proposed to construct exclusive Iran-India pipeline through the Arabian sea but was kept on the backburner due to cost overruns, and now maybe again that option is all set to be explored again.

If India is already out why Pakistan offered Guaranty to India?
It make sense for Pakistan to use this as a economic benefit, they will earn lot of money out of it. Money means everything Musharraf knew this very well.

If India is already out of the deal there was no need to make this kind of a statement, some people might think India is pursuing good diplomacy but with whom ? favoring Iran India risks losing favor with the Arabs not to mention the Indo-US ties which are already under a bit of strain. More importantly India is in the midst of getting the much waited and much-worked for nuclear deal, this kind of diplomatic behaviour could jeopardize that. India is a booming economy, thats great but i think they might be getting a bit ahead of themselves here.

From my personal point of view, India could have used this to win favor with US against Pakistan. Pakistan has already signed the deal and china is willing to invest in it too, by saying no to this or any other deals with Iran, India could have won a lot of "extra" favor with US against Pakistan.

a) China
b) Pakistan
May be Bangladesh

India wasted good 8-9 years with silly delays for so long Pakistan and Iran should move ahead and finish the deal and move a pipeline to China

Why buzz Pakistan for everything lyk a bell!!!
Just because of an old habbit maybe.

Anyway, if this is the reason then India should have agreed on the formula to take the pipeline through coastal waters as we dont have any security issues in waters. And why get involved in the talks in first place if this was the Issue !! and that also not for a few days but a decade !!!

India on one hand is asking Pakistan a rail route to Pakistan-Iran-Turkey route where cargo is in an easy approach for threats but yet it has concerns over security of gas travelling in pipelines. Hillarious !!
