India, Pakistan showcase aviation wares at Farnborough airshow

Led by their respective state-run agencies, India and Pakistan are exhibiting their aviation wares at the Farnborough International Airshow that got underway Monday at this town, some 55 km from southwest of London.

India’s Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) and the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC) are among 1,393 exhibitors from 40 countries taking part in the 47th edition of the show at this Hampshire town, one of the biggest in the aviation calendar.

India’s Minister of State for Defence M.M. Pallam Raju is leading the Indian delegation, which includes Defence Production Secretary Raj Kumar Singh and the chief of the Southern Air Command, Air Marshal S. Mukerji.

HAL gained credibility as a serious exhibitor in the international arena after two star products from its stable — the Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) ‘Dhruv’ and the Intermediate Jet Trainer (IJT) — made a mark at the previous edicition of the show here in 2008.

A specialist defence news website, globalnews.net, has said that American giant Lockheed Martin is likely to display an aerial refueling device at the airshow, which was co-developed with HAL for the F-16 fighter aircraft.

‘This makes it the first time an Indian company was involved in a high-technology sub-system development of the F-16 fighter aircraft,’ it said in a recent report.

Lockheed Martin’s intention to display the device at Farnborough ‘was to show the high tech capabilities of its Indian partner and expose the world market for F-16 aircraft to the possibility of buying F-16 sub-systems from India’, the website said.

‘With over 500 F-16 fighters in service with 22 countries, the Indian probe-and-drogue refueling system could find a wide market provided it was tested and certified by the military aviation authorities in the buyer countries.’

The F-16 is one of the six jets in contention for an Indian Air Force order for 126 medium multi-role combat aircraft in a deal valued at $10 billion.

Pakistan is displaying its JF-17 fighter jet, developed with China’s help, for the first time at the airshow.

The JF-17 is a single-engined, medium-sized, light-weight multi-role combat aircraft, developed jointly by the Chengdu Aircraft Industries Corp (CAC) of China and the Pakistan Air Force.

Incidentally, the exhibitors from Pakistan and China — the PAC and China National Aero-Technology Import-Export Corp (CATIC) — are shown on the Farnborough website as sharing the same stand at the airshow.

Highlights of this year’s show include the eagerly-awaited international debut of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner passenger airplane offering buyers from all over the globe the first opportunity to tour the aircraft.

The flight test airplane ZA0003 touched down at Farnborough Sunday and will remain on static display through to midday Tuesday, the organisers said. State-run Air India has ordered 27 such aircraft, while private carrier Jet Airways has opted for 10.

A biennial event, the Farnborough International Airshow in 2008 was attended by over 130,000 trade visitors with exhibiting companies announcing order figures of $88.7 billion, more than doubling 2006 figures of $42bn.

India shops for combat aircraft at Farnborough | Sindh Today News

Farnborough, July 20 (IANS) Indian defence authorities, led by Minister of State for Defence M.M. Pallam Raju, are looking to see the international response to some of the latest multi-role combat aircraft on display at the Farnborough Air Show here which are being evaluated by India for upgrading its air force.

Actual or close versions of four of the six latest combat aircraft that have completed trials in India and in the country of manufacture are on display at the air show. They are the naval version of the JAS 39 Gripen NG/IN of SAAB, the Swedish aerospace company; the Eurofighter Typhoon made by a European consortium; the F/A-18IN Super Hornet of Boeing and the F-16IN Super Viper of American giant Lockheed Martin.

The Indin Air Force (IAF) had launched the medium multi-role combat aircraft (MMRCA) competition for supply of 126 jets. Eighteen will be purchased in fly-away condition and 108 of them will eventually be manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited. The defence ministry has allocated roughly 5.8 billion pounds ($10 billion) for the purchase of these aircraft, which has been touted as India’s single largest defence deal ever.

Six aircraft bid for the contract. The remaining two are the Rafale of the French manufacturer Dassault and the Russian Mikoyan MiG-35.

In May 2009, the IAF completed the technical evaluation of all the six fighter jets. Their flight evaluation began in August last year and the evaluation of the last jet, the Gripen, was completed this March.

The Indian defence ministry requested an updated bid in April. The IAF is to complete an evaluation report on the six fighters, probably this month, and the defence ministry will then begin to shortlist them based on the IAF’s evaluations.

Of the four fighter jets on display at the air show, the Gripen IN, a version of the Gripen NG (Next Generation), has increased fuel capacity, higher payload, increased combat range and endurance and super-cruise capability. SAAB International has proposed to India the transfer of technology if Gripen wins the MRCA and make India “an independent manufacturer” of its own fighter jets.

Boeing’s offer is the Super Hornet variant named F/A-18IN. It will include Raytheon’s Apg-79 AESA radar which sharply increases the pilot’s “situational awareness”. In August 2008, Boeing submitted an industrial participation proposal to India describing partnerships with companies in India.

The Eurofighter Typhoon is a twin-engine canard-delta wing – the wing platform designed as a triangle – multi-role aircraft designed and built by a consortium of three companies: Alena Aeronautica of Italy, BAE Systems of Britain and European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company (EADS), formed after the merger of three aeronautics corporations of France, Germany and Spain.

The F-16IN Super Viper, a variant of the F-16 Fighting Falcon, is a multi-role jet fighter developed by Lockheed Martin. It is a dogfighter with numerous innovations including a frameless bubble canopy for better visibility, a side-mounted control stick to ease control while under high gravitational forces, and a reclined seat to reduce the effect of g-forces on the pilot. Its manufacturer has described the Indian variant as “the most advanced and capable F-16 ever”.

No my friend, it is just the angle of reflection that is giving you the illusion of DSI being shrunk. Just trace the white stripe of paint visible just inside the air inlet and you will see for yourself. :)
 
Because it is not yet a certified aircraft.

Tejas has been to a few airshows in India before

Most likely since the IOC is nearing completion , HAL did not have any of the LSP's to spare , as they were all needed for finishing testing.

May be next year.
