India, Japan have a role in global stability: Manmohan

Tokyo (IANS): Stressing that the transformation of India-Japan relations was developing into a strategic partnership, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Thursday said both countries stood as two major powers ready to play a commensurate global role.

"India believes that a strong and dynamic Japan is a factor of peace and stability in Asia and the world," Manmohan Singh said at a reception hosted in the Japanese capital by the Japan-India Association and the Japan India Parliamentary Friendship League.

Grateful to Japan for the developmental assistance provided for India's industrial modernisation, Singh said he looked forward to the next of the relationship to expand on trade flows, technology and investment.

Commending the contribution of the Indian community in Japan, Singh said their achievements had made India proud, and urged them to redouble their efforts to strengthen the bilateral relationship between the two countries.

Manmohan Singh wraps up his three-day visit to Tokyo Thursday and will travel to Beijing later in the day for the seventh ASEM (Asia-Europe Meeting) summit where India will be participating for the first time after being inducted along with Mongolia and Pakistan into the Asia-Europe grouping.

This will also be the first multilateral meeting that Manmohan Singh will be attending after the inking of India's historic nuclear pacts with the US and France.

It was in the last ASEM summit at Helsinki in 2006 that a decision was taken to induct India.

As the ASEM comprises some of the heavyweight economies of the world, the global financial crisis will be one of the major talking points during the meeting of the leaders at the conclave.

A slew of bilateral meetings has been arranged on the sidelines of the ASEM summit.
