India hoist with its own petard
February 21, 2014, 8:42 pm

The danger of having Tigers as pets is that their owners run the risk of ending up inside them. When India’s Congress leaders plunged feet first into creating Tiger terrorism in this country to further their geo-strategic interests not even in their wildest dreams would they have imagined that they would one day be pursued by their Frankenstein; they would have thought the Tiger would purr forever at their feet.

Today, the Congress leaders are troubled by a decision of the Tamil Nadu politicians they tried to appease by training, arming, funding and coddling Sri Lankan terrorists, to release the killers of Rajiv Gandhi, one-time God Father of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).

No sooner had the Indian Supreme Court (SC) granted Rajiv killers relief by commuting their death penalty to life imprisonment on the grounds of an inordinate delay in the disposal of their mercy petitions by the Indian President than Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalitha decided to release them from jail. Her hasty action jolted the Congress-led government into resisting her move and prompted the SC to halt their release. No less a person than Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has declared that freeing the Rajiv killers is ‘contrary to all principles of justice’. Rajiv’s son and prime ministerial aspirant Rahul has frowned on Jayalalitha’s decision saying, "If some person kills the PM and is released then how will a common man get justice?"

But, here in this country, time was when governments were forced by western governments to negotiate with the killers of a President and make peace with them. Another President––Chandrika Kumaratunga––who naively went out of her way, taking huge political risks in the process, to find a political solution through talks with the killers of President Ranasinghe Premadasa had a narrow escape when they made an attempt on her life. Worse, the state of Sri Lanka was coerced into undertaking a disastrous ‘peace deal’ aimed at allowing the killers of Rajiv and Premadasa to reign supreme in the North and the East. But, the Indian leaders never so much as made a whimper of protest against such sinister moves in spite of the Rajiv assassination.

The Indian SC judgment could not have come at a worse time for the Congress. On the one hand, fearing an ignominious defeat at the forthcoming general election it is desperately looking for coalition straws to clutch at in South India. On the other, it has had to resist a move to set Rajiv killers free notwithstanding the risk of ruining its relations with Tamil Nadu politicians who have sunk their differences to secure the release of those killers. Worse, the Centre will have to appease the same pro-LTTE leaders in Tamil Nadu by voting, in Geneva next month, against Sri Lanka, which got rid of Prabhakaran, who masterminded and ordered the assassination of Rajiv!

India’s Centre has been rendered so impotent by Tamil Nadu that it cannot even have the killers of a former PM hanged! The wrong policies of the Congress and BJP governments over the past few decades have created a situation where the tail is wagging the dog.

The US created al Qaeda as part of its strategy to get rid of Russians in Afghanistan and in a not-so-strange turn of events replete with irony it has been hoist with its own petard; it is now busy fighting its Frankestein. This is the price a country, however mighty it may think it is, has to pay for using terrorism against others to further its interests.

There is little India could do to prevent its vote at the UNHRC against those who removed the scourge of LTTE terror being seen as a vote for the sympathisers of the Rajiv killers in Tamil Nadu and elsewhere.
