I had always heard you have to go to court if you want to change your name to something it is not.
You’d probably have to have your Social Security Card reassigned and stuff like that so they aren’t going to be making it an easy process.

If she came here on immigrant visa then, you would get an option at the time of citizenship oath ceremony to get her name changed there. The officials would give a court document right away signed by the judge showing her name change. This process is applicable to those who have just arrived in USA as perm resident given that he/she would need to file for citizenship after 5 years being perm resident.

Other option is to file name change thru a court. You can collect all the information at your county office. They’ll let you know what is the process.

So what i read about going to court and get something approved from Local Judge is true , sounds like a hectic process :( any idea how much it might cost ? and time frame ?

She is not on a Visa or Green card, she is born in US .

It depends on the State. For example:

Not a difficult or expensive process, but lots of steps involved, that is all.

I am looking for South Carolina ..

Probably the first and most important thing might be is to change your name with USPS after she is done with the courts and Social security etc.

This is how you can legally change your name for South Carolina:

https://eforms.com/name-change/sc/

Once the name change is approved just mail copies of the legal decision to all relevant government agencies, including social security, driver's licenses, passports, etc.

The process is straightforward but like many legal matters, it can be quite tedious.

Hope this helps.
