ANP is infact a great party with a great history, it has a very deep root and impacts in Pakistani politics. the awami national party was a socialist party with influence from socialism of the soviet union. it was formed much before another socialist party called PPP by Bhutto was formed
it was originally called NAP (national awami party) which had two factions, one wali khan faction(son of bacha khan) and another the east pakistan faction
the east pakistan faction later become awami league which rules bangladesh today and the west pakistani faction became the ANP
both of them became ethnic national parties, wali faction became pashtun nationalist the awami league became the bengali nationalist and both parties also became the property of one family, in bengladesh the party is run by hasina wajid the daughter of mujeeb ur rehman and in pakistan it is run by the grand son of bacha khan
this party could have played an important role in pakistani politics but it saw the same demise as that of muslim league (which also broke into many factions and lost its substance)
i find quite a stark resemblence how the national parties of Pakistan started as country wide parties and finally met their ultimate fate as ethnic nationalist parties
1) PPP which started out as a pakistani party later became sindhi nationalist party
2) muslim league which started out as a country wide party later became punjabi nationalist party
3) ANP which started out as a country wide party became the biggest elements to divide pakistan because of ethnic inclination
