US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton encouraged Australia yesterday to increase its military ties with India, including joint navy exercises, but added that Washington also supported the peaceful rise of China.

Clinton and US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta arrived in Perth on the eve of a bilateral security summit with their Australian counterparts.

Clinton said the United States had made a strategic priority of supporting India in playing a larger role in Asian affairs.

"We would welcome joint Australia-Indian naval-vessel exercises in the future," she said.

"We look for ways to support the peaceful rise of China, to support China becoming a responsible stakeholder in the international community, and hope to see a gradual but consistent opening up of a Chinese society and political system that will more closely give the Chinese people the opportunities that we in the US and Australia are lucky to take for granted."

The US and Australia also want to increase US military access to the Australian naval base south of Perth, and to bombing ranges in the northern Outback, as part of the shift of US might to the Asia-Pacific region.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard said the summit would cover plans for co-operation on military aviation as well as warships.

Obviously with regard to counter China, but I think Australia might see India also as a competitor in the Indian Ocean area. With them modernising their sub and amphibious carrier fleets, possibly even F35Bs, they will be a strong navy in future.

Strong - Yes, but nowhere near the Indian Navy which will be operating every ship required to be seen as a true Blue Water Navy with amphibious operation capability in a few years time, if u say that India is the competitor of Australia in the Indian ocean region than China is it's competitor in the Pacific Ocean region & to be really fair Australian economy has more or less got saturated with dependence on US for it's overall defence, Australia can no way challenge the two rising Asian giants, the best thing it can do is to have good relations with both & sort of balance one against other & that is exactly what Australia is doing.

It will be good to have India and Australia working together in defense sector. We have a good defense relations with most of the countries in IOR region. Australian navy is going to modernize its fleet and having naval exercises with them will further increase the operational capabilities of IN.

Of course, but that's just another reason why they might see us as a competitor as soon as an Indian carrier group might head south of the equator. :)

You cannot use the word "Strong" to describe the Royal Australian Navy, they are the biggest Island in the world, yet their naval totally not even more than all of the United States Coast Guard.

The Navy in Australia is not task as a forward operation force but rather a costal defence force as the Australian seriously rely on the ANZUS pack for US defences of Australian Soil, the new NT Agreement (Where 2500 US MArine will station and train in NT, Australia) is the way the United States honoring the deal. Short of having a permanent naval base in Australia, this is the next best thing it could happen with the ANZUS relationship. ANd you can see how US value this piece of land as their defense partner.

However, in the coming decade, the Australian Navy will be seriously revamp so it would definitely a power in the pacific. The incursion of 2 LHD is the precursor to Australian once again owning their own Aircraft carrier.

They are already strong when you compare the navies of the countries around the Indian Ocean and that's what we talked about, the modernisations will make them even better and I don't see any other country in this region except of India having such a fleet a capable fleet in the coming years. But with US protecting them and not many countries around them to attack them, they don't need a navy that can cover all their costlines anyway.

Well, they are a professional force, that's one thing we can say for sure, the problem is, when you look at the ship the RAN currently have, they are miserable. the biggest combat ship operate is the 4 Adelaide Class FFG. and with the ANZAC class they only have 12 FFG to defent the whole Australia (The size of Australia is almost identital to the size of USA)

IN all, we have 12 FFG and 14 Patrol boat to defend the whole Australia after the Perth class destroyer gone under, and it will be remain like this for the period until hobart class destroyer and the Canberra class LHD in service.

Right now, on this moment, Australian Naval power is even smaller than Taiwan.

I think co-op with IN and USN is the best way forward for RAN in the coming years.

Comes after julia issued a white paper named "The Asian Century". I, wonder how Australia's biggest trading partner and the biggest investor is going to look at it.

Will look at it the same, beacuse "the asian century" is just a call for increase trading and support to our Asian Neighbor, it does not call for a drop on AUS-US relations, again, look at how Australia allowed to host the 2500 US Marine is a good example.

The problem is, we have not have much relation with Asian Country apart form Indonesia in the last few decade, these all gotta change.

What happened to "Genocide of Sikhs bill Aussies wanted to table it in their Parliament session " :taz:

Looks like Aussies are twisted for American interests

It's not about quanitity, it's about quality.

Do you see any other country in the world that has a population of 23 million, spending 150 billion on it's navy for 40+ new ships and equipment ? :)

12 new submarines
2 new helicopter/aircraft/amphibious carries
4 new air warfare destroyers
24 new corvettes
6 new future frigates

I really doubt that figure. Any source to confirm that??

Well, i did say the RAN is a capable force(Think the word i use is professional) but should not be called a strong force, because it ain matter how professional your forces are, you can't do much when you do not have a decent quantity of ship.

I am not saying because Australia is the same size than the USA, we should have the same number of ship and we should not be depending on the ANZUS too much. The thing is, we need more airwarfare destroyer to compensate our large patrol section of the Australian Air Space. The ship we have ordered are needed now, we actually can't wait until 2030 to get them all.
