High-level team leaves for India for trade talks
By: Imran Ali Kundi | Published: September 26, 2011
ISLAMABAD - A high-powered Pakistani business delegation headed by Commerce Minister Makhdoom Amin Fahim would leave for India today (Monday) for the trade talks after a gap of almost three years.
The Pakistani business delegation would visit India from September 26 to 30 on the invitation of Indian Commerce Minister Anand Sharma. It is worth mentioning here that it would be the first meeting between two Commerce Ministers of Pakistan and India after the Mumbai incident (26 November 2008).
We hope that India will drop its opposition over the Eurperon Unions trade concessions for Islamabad given after the unprecedented floods in July-August 2010, said Commerce Ministry officials while talking to TheNation a few days back. The EU granted trade concession on 75 textile and other items to Pakistan after the floods in July-August 2010, however later due to strong resistance from India the matter was deferred.
Similarly, he was of the view that Indian side is expecting that Pakistan would give New Delhi the Most Favoured Nation (MFN) status, which is longstanding demand of the India. When asked whether Pakistan would give MFN status to India during the upcoming trade talks, the official said that negotiations would definitely take place in this regard.
But, he said that it was pre-mature that we could say that Islamabad would offer MFN status to India in the upcoming talks.
Pakistan would also ask India to reduce the non-tariff barriers. In April this year, Commerce Secretaries of both the countries had expressed their willingness to proceed further on issues like removing Non-Tariff Barriers (NTBs), and Pakistan extending the Most Favoured Nation (MFN) status to India.
Pakistan and India are likely to make progress in opening of bank branches in both countries in order to promote bilateral trade in the upcoming trade talks.
The current level of trade between India and Pakistan is around some $ two billion. The officials of both countries believed that this level of trade is much low and should be further enhance in next few years.
