ISLAMABAD: While some improvement has been seen in the attitude of the otherwise extremely arrogant Taliban towards peace negotiations and two top leaders of the country Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif and PTI chief Imran Khan are on the same page for resolving the issue, some hidden forces have joined hands to start terrorist activities to derail the peace process.
While the PTI chief Imran Khan is absolutely clear on the peace process and warding off all pressures sticks to his stance that talks are the only solution to avoid massive bloodshed in the country, Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, who is in London, also poured cold water on the hopes of an influential lobby in Pakistan that is bent upon derailing the peace process by making a statement that hidden hands may also be active and the Taliban have not accepted responsibility for the latest Peshawar blasts.
Positive signals have started emanating from the Taliban side like disowning the group that accepted responsibility for the Peshawar Church attack and taking action against it. A leader of their Punjab chapter is already supporting peace talks. However, an influential lobby in Pakistan is ready to do anything to hijack the peace process. If anybody tells this lobby to let the peace talks start and that other options may be considered should the process fail, this lobby insists that talks must not start mainly on the basis of points; only Waziristan operation is solution to terrorism, Taliban are not ready for talks and Taliban are carrying/continuing terrorist activities. While those who came into power with the public mandate have decided in principle that the dialogue option will be used as the first priority and talks will be done with full sincerity, this lobby is doing everything to frustrate the peace process.
Strangely, the very thought of initiation of peace process scares this lobby that is mostly represented by the so-called liberals. This lobby comes up with different arguments in support of assertion that negotiations must not be started and operation must be launched immediately; however, all saner elements in the society directly facing terrorism for more than a decade now the government, the opposition, all political parties, Ulema belonging to all schools of thought support the peace process and demand an urgent announcement of ceasefire and start of negotiations.
The most important feature of this lobby is that whoever supports the peace process or advocates the resolution of issues through dialogue, it immediately brands them the Taliban supporters. The confused people are completely unaware of ground realities and are not even ready to let the government isolate the opposite side.
Top sources in the government confirmed to The News on Monday that the authorities are clear now that the latest bomb blasts are being carried out by some third hand having the support of foreign agencies. The only objective is to derail the peace process, the sources say.
In addition to positive developments on the Taliban side, the latest statements by Nawaz Sharif and Imran Khan show that sanity will prevail and the country will come out of the influence of this mysterious lobby after more than a decade and the peace process will start at all levels thus closing the chapter of continuous bloodshed in the country. However, if this lobby was allowed to continue its activities, there are strong chances that not only the peace process will derail, but also Pakistan will face an unending war and bloodshed in its streets.
