A firefighting helicopter crashed in Uiseong County while battling the blazes, making it one of the worst wildfires to hit South Korea in recent memory, because the pilot died in the event, officials temporarily grounded all firefighting helicopters across the country, at least 19 people have been killed, 19 injured and large areas of the southeast have been devastated by the flames, which are being fanned by strong winds and dry weather.

The Wildfires
Starting in Sancheong County South, Gyeongsang Province on Friday March 22, 2025, the wildfires swiftly expanded to other regions including as Uiseong and Andong in North Gyeongsang Province, the fires were especially difficult to contain because of their quick spread, which was made worse by dry winds and high temperatures. Helicopter Crash
Approximately 12:54 p.m. on March 26, 2025, the firefighting helicopter, an S-76 model, crashed in a mountainous location close to Gyoan-ri, Sinpyeong-myeon, Uiseong County, the only person inside the airplane was the pilot, a 73-year-old man who was pronounced deceased at the site.
