HAVELSAN, Turkey’s leading defence service and systems provider, yesterday signed its first contract with the Royal Brunei Technical Services (RBTS), for the supply of an army simulator at the BRIDEX Exhibition 2013.

A memorandum of understanding was signed for the provision of an artillery forward observer and fire direction centre simulator, which has training capabilities to create scenarios with static and moving targets on various terrain views.

It also has target practice and administration training capabilities, and allows combatants to observe the effects of artillery weapons and combinations of various ammunitions.

It features a simulated laser range finder, simulated binoculars, simulation of shooting calculations and effect of environmental conditions, a real-time combat field environment with visual and aural effects, customisable synthetic 3D training terrains and has high resolution satellite images and 3D models.

RBTS Chief Executive Hjh Rosmawati Hjh Manaf said that the RBTS already has one training simulator in the Penanjong Garrison in Tutong which has mortar simulation capabilities, but that the company would like to expand it further.

“This is the first step of our cooperation and day by day we will improve our relations and we don’t just want to sell something to Brunei, but we would like to use this opportunity to transfer our technology to Brunei as well,” said Atilla Gurdere, chairman of the Havelsan board, who added that the company is “very happy to cooperate” with Brunei.

Gurdere said that the company is focused on software and simulator systems.

“We are also highly experienced in creating command and control systems from maintenance and also simulators,” he said.

Havelsan was established by Air Force Foundation in 1982 as Turkish-American firm Havelsan-Aydin to provide maintenance for Turkish Air Force’s high technology radars.

In 1985 Havelsan was separated from the foreign shareholders and incorporated as a national company with Turkish Armed Forces Foundation owning 98 per cent.

Havelsan has been designing and planning critical defense systems such as Management Information System, Homeland Security System, Simulation and Training System and Command Control System.
