BENGALURU: In its 75th year, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is looking to reach two major milestones by the year-end to keep its monopoly in defence aircraft manufacturing in tact and to continue to bag orders from the armed forces. The light combat helicopter (LCH) is likely to get operational clearance in the coming weeks, while the light utility helicopter (LUH) will have its first prototype flight by December-end. The defence ministry has already placed an order for 187 LUHs.

A senior HAL official said they are awaiting clearance for the basic configuration of LCH from the Centre for Military Airworthiness and Certification, a wing of DRDO. This is because weaponized versions will differ based on needs.

Tumakuru complex: All hurdles have been cleared for the construction of a helicopter complex at Bidarehalli Kaval village in Gubbi taluk of Tumakuru district, initially targeted at production of LUH.

A senior state government official said the cabinet has agreed to remove high-tension wires running over the land locked for the project. Reacting to this, HAL chairman T Suvarna Raju told TOI: "Activities that support LCH, and Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) Dhruv will also be taken up. Over all, the Gubbi complex will concentrate on helicopter manufacturing systems, assembly hangars, composites and component manufacturing factories and engine component manufacturing units."

He said the ground-breaking ceremony could happen as part of HAL's 75 years this year and the unit could be operational by 2017-18."
