HAL forms JV with Rolls-Royce for aero engine part
State-run Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) Tuesday announced a joint venture (JV) with Rolls-Royce of Britain to manufacture compressor shroud rings for aero engines.
The 50:50 JV will build a production facility in this tech hub by 2012 with the latest manufacturing techniques, the company said in a statement here.
'As strategic partners since 1956, we have been producing the Orpheus engine under licence from Rolls-Royce. The partnership flourished for the BAE System's Hawk Advanced Jet Trainer's (AJT) Adour Mk871 engine and Adour Mk811 engines for Jaguar fighter jets,' HAL chairman and managing director Ashok Nayak said.
Rolls-Royce chief executive John Rose said his company would develop advanced manufacturing technologies and create skilled jobs in the Indian aerospace industry through the JV.
About 1,300 Rolls-Royce engines are still in service in India, spanning civil and defence aerospace, marine and energy sectors.
HAL became a supplier to the $15.3-billion Rolls-Royce in 2003, exporting ring forgings for use in its advanced civil aero engines - the Trent.
