PESHAWAR: At least six gunmen ambushed a military vehicle on patrol in northwestern Pakistan on Wednesday, killing two security officials and wounding two others, police said.

The attackers, believed to be pro-Taliban militants, opened fire on the army pickup from both sides of the road in Sarai Khan on the outskirts of Bannu city, local police chief Sajjad Khan told AFP.

Security officials confirmed the attack and casualties. It came a day after Taliban ambushed a school bus on the outskirts of Peshawar, killing four children and the van driver.

The children studied at an elite English-language school of a type reviled by hardline militants who oppose what they see as Western-imported, secular education.

Bannu is located close to Pakistan’s lawless tribal belt.
