Govt & Chinese Company eager to start work on Lahore Mass Transit System

LAHORE - Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif has said that Mass Transit Project is of paramount importance and Punjab government wants to launch it immediately to provide better facilities of communication to the people. He said that provision of comfortable and quality-travelling facilities to the masses is top priority of the government and a comprehensive strategy has been adopted in this regard.

He expressed these views during meeting with a delegation of Chinese company Norinco International led by its Vice President Hu Farong, here on Tuesday. Secretary Transport, Secretary Industries and Deputy Chairman Punjab Investment Board were also present on the occasion.

He said China is a trustworthy friend of Pakistan and extending full cooperation in its various development sectors. He said Pak-China friendship is immortal and people of both the countries have great love for each other. Chinese company Norinco International and Punjab government can jointly start Mass Transit Project.

The CM while talking to the delegation, lauded the cooperation of China in various sectors of development in Punjab and added that an agreement for provision of CNG buses with a Chinese company has been recently made under which CNG buses would be plied in big cities of the province and this project has been started from the provincial metropolis. Similarly, an agreement of BT Cotton Technology has been signed with another company of China, he added.

He said China was also providing full cooperation in different sectors including Heavy Mechanical Complex and it is the desire of his government that China should also come forward in Mass Transit Project and review to start this joint venture of great importance. He said that China has made great progress in various sectors after its independence and has become a strong force of the world due to hard work and dedication in a very short span of time. He said that we also want to benefit from Chinese progress and its latest technology. Chief Minister said that he had witnessed underground metro train during his recent visit to Iran and we want to start this important project as soon as possible. He said a joint committee can be constituted for the accomplishment of this project which can be helpful for furthering this project after discussion about it. The CM said that Pakistan is a developing country and its resources are limited, therefore, we want to complete this mass transit project as a low cost masterpiece by remaining within our resources. He said that mass transit project will prove to be a milestone with regard to development of the province and provision of best travelling facilities to the citizens. That is why we want to start work on this project at the earliest, he added. It was agreed during the meeting that Chinese company, Norinco International and Punjab government can start mass transit project as a joint venture.

Head of the delegation, Hu Farong said Punjab Chief Minister has done a lot of work on Mass Transit Project and we have great interest in this project and will soon present a course of action in this regard. He agreed that work can be started on this project jointly and a joint committee can also be constituted for this purpose. Earlier, Secretary Transport gave a detailed briefing regarding various aspects of Mass Transit Project and site visits.

Those who met the Chief Minister include Sun Wankqi, Deputy General Manager, Engineering Department of Norinco Company, Miss Cui Dongjian, Project Manager, International Engineering, representative of Norinco Business in Islamabad Yin Lujon, Chief Executive Officer of Fecto Technologies Pakistan Muhammad Yasin, Senior Manager Business Development Fecto Technologies Pakistan Lt-Col (Retd) Sohail Ahmad, Senior Manager Business Development Capt (Retd) Shahnawaz and Consultant Mazhar Iqbal.

what is this mass transport? is it a subway or light-railway system?

light rail costs less than undergroud subways and china has great experiences in building mass transpotation systems in populous city.

in fact, there are over 20 cities in china building similar systems. in my hometown, beijing, there are 10 lines ( including subways and light-rails) under construction simutaneously.
