ISLAMABAD: The government plans to spend Rs38.7 billion for accelerated development of less-developed regions of the country during the current fiscal year.
Of the total allocation, an amount of Rs5 billion has been provided for the People's Works Programme-I (PWP) reflected in the Cabinet Division, Rs0.19 billion for other projects reflected in the Narcotics Control Division, and Rs0.35 billion for Interior Division for areas development projects and special packages for militancy affected areas in Malakand Swat.
As per data, an amount of Rs33.2 billion has been earmarked as block allocation for development activities in special areas while administrations of areas concerned have been authorized to allocate funds to respective projects according to their own priorities.
The comparison of allocation for years 2011-12 and 2012-13 indicates that the allocations for ministries and divisions have been significantly increased for this year.
During this year, priority has been accorded to those ongoing schemes and projects which are near completion, so that their benefits can reach the neglected segments of the community.
These development activities are supplemented to the Federal Vertical Programme being implemented in various sectors such as power generation projects, health sector programme, Family Planning, Expanded Programme for Immunization, National Maternal, Neonatal, Child Care, Education Improvement Projects, Enhanced HIV/AIDS, National Programme for Water Courses Improvement, Safe Drinking Water for All, Area Development projects in FATA against poppy cultivation etc.
Moreover, this year, Rs 5 billion is proposed to be spent on schemes funded and executed from PWP-I based on prioritized list of projects, identified by the parliamentarians in their respective constituencies within the overall parameters of the approved policy and budgetary ceilings fixed by the government.
