Well my uncle was healthy until August of this year with almost no complain of poor-health whatsoever. So back in August he suddenly became weak and was not able to sleep during nights. After few days of non-sleep he went to the hospital and doctors came to conclusion that he is suffering from Tuberculosis in his brain.

He was admitted in the hospital for about 1 month and discharged only last week (1 year's medication is advised) but today he complained that he can no longer hear from both ears and we had to use piece of paper to write a note for him and he was able to reply to that with extremely weak voice.. He lost about 25 KG in one month while he was admitted in the hospital in August/September.

The entire family is worried and he is my youngest uncle having 4 children's aged from 3-13 years old. He lives in London and half of my family is literally crying everyday because of him.

My another uncle asked me to find better hospital anywhere in the world who can cure his ailment and is also affordable. In London, he is being treated free of cost but the treatment is so slow that my uncles are seriously worried about his deteriorating health condition.

I tried to search all over Google but could not find any hospital rankings in this speciality. I am sure there must be some good hospitals in London, USA or even India. But I was not able to find anything

Can somebody help me please? its very important

London has good expertise in treating tuberculosis, specially the Hospital for Tropical Diseases, which has many world renowned experts on Tuberculosis.

Please be aware that if your uncle has extensive Tuberculous Meningitis, treatment will likely be slow and difficult, and has the potential of causing lasting neurological deficiencies despite treatment.

Good Luck with the situation.

Have you tried military hospital's in Pakistan? Maybe a long shot, but money always talks. I cannot offer you anything more, but I will pray for you and your family, and your uncle. May Allah give him strength to over come this..all I can say is this life is a test & the test is how we answer these questions, we must place our trust in Allah..and pray for the best and strive for it..wish him a speedy recovery from the pit of my heart.

Everybody comes to London for treatment and I am not able to find a single hospital in London where they apparently have world class set up for Tuberculous Meningitis (yes it is Tuberculous Meningitis). Doctors come to his ward for once or twice a day, give him 2-3 medicines and disappear forever. The entire family is worried because nothing has improved since day 1 and every passing day we feel he is getting weaker and weaker... now this hear loss issue has shocked the entire family.

I am thinking to visit some hospitals located in Central London area and see what they can advise...

Contact this place:

The Hospital for Tropical Diseases,
Mortimer Market Building,
Capper Street,
Tottenham Court Road,
London WC1E 6JB

They have the expertise you need, so see if your uncle can be transferred there, or if a consultant specializing in TB there can review the whole case.

Any suggestion is welcomed

Thanks for your time

If the hearig loss of your uncle is your problem ,i suggest you ,you cant do anything about it.

In TB its hearing loss vs life of the person.

The hearing loss can be caused by three main reasons.

1.side effect of the four anti-biotics your uncle is taking. The Anti biotics cause the pheripheral nerves damage.

solution-Ask doctor to prescribe vitamins for controlling the side effect.

2.The TB bacteria may attack the auditory nerve.
solution-no solution ,just finish the 4 drug -10 month regimen without delay.

3.The TB bacteria may attack the auditory part of the brain.
solution-no solution ,just finish the 4 drug -10 month regimen without delay.

This is the standrad procedure for all TB.

If you still want better results,

In US there are Drug trials happening which can kill TB bacteria in Around 4 months thus reducing the damage to brain or other parts of the body.

This is a TB speciality hospital in bengaluru.

The only Treatment of Tubercular meningitis is anti tuberculosis medication (oral).

The combination and duration of medication given may vary according to age and severity. The diagnosis i am sure was made by lumbar punture so they can know from the CSF anaylisis about if it is a partially treated or severe etc tuberculosis. CSF culture and sensitivity can also give a good information about sensitivity of ATT drugs to be administered or if any other infection is there as well.

Other diagnostic tests performed are x-ray chest, x-ray abdomen, CT-scan head or abdomen etc. to find Tubercular lesions any where else in the body specifically in the brain. Since you are saying it is dignosed as tubercular meningitis and he wasn't having any neurological symptoms before then i assume the patient was presenting with symptoms of meningism at the start. Loss of any nervous function can be temporary due to acute inflammation of meninges, ventriculomegaly. The permanent loss of function will suggest prolong exposure with untreated disease process or due to a tubercular space occupying lesion in the brain.

You can not expedite the treatment in any good better or best hospital for this particular illness. As i mentioned that the only treatment is ATT or any other supportive and symptomatic treatments. Patient like in any typical sever meningitis will have 40-50% chances of prognosis; which makes it a grievous illness.

Having said that i would say that your family's concerns are genuine as you guys are in better position to observe the kind of treatment and attention he is getting from his physician and the hospital staff. If I be in your position i will make sure my relative is in a neurology speciality hospital with advance life support readily available. Also i wouldn't over react to shift him if he is already admited in such facility but pray to god that ATT regime should get more and more time to be titrated into his body without he suffering from any systemic or nervous function loss or god forbidden loss of consciousness.

My prayers for your Uncle, i wish him speedy recovery.

There is no quick fix for TB. Let him be in uk. he is in good hands. However his loss of hearing may be related to the medicines he is taking and he should contact his physicians again to explain what is going on. The important thing is to keep in touch with your physician and make sure that you comply with their treatment. The rest is upto God and in Him we should all trust. Rather than worrying, pray to Allah SWT for his quick recovery.
Weight loss and loss of energy is also common during treatment and once he starts getting better he will regain his weight.
By the way email me if you need any further advice and close this thread as it would be counterproductive.
