Goa Shipyard lays keel for second fast attack craft for Mauritius coastguard

Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) has announced that it held a keel-laying ceremony for the second of two fast attack craft being built for the Mauritius Police Force National Coast Guard (NCP).

The keel-laying ceremony took place on 22 May and the shipyard is expected to deliver the pair from January 2016 onwards.

GSL says that the 50 m long, 35 kt waterjet-powered fast attack craft is based on an in-house design that has been modified to meet the specific requirements of the Mauritius Police Force.

According to a GSL news release, the craft will be fitted with "special facilities" for carrying out limited fire-fighting, pollution control, and humanitarian (and disaster) relief missions in addition to routine maritime security operations.

In a new chapter for GSL in export promotion, the Keel for the 11 Fast Interceptor Boats (FIB), being built by GSL for the Government of Mauritius was laid on 2nd June 2014
at GSL Unit II, Sancoale. Mrs. K.O Fong Weng-Poorun, Senior Chief Executive of the Prime Minister’s Office, Mauritius did the honour in presence of Mr. A. Nayeck,
Dy. High Commissioner of Mauritius, RAdm (Retd) Shekhar Mital, NM, CMD GSL. Directors and other Senior Officials of GSL were also present on the occasion.

The contract for construction and delivery of 10 FIBs for Mauritius Coast Guard and One FIB for Revenue Authority of Mauritius was signed between GSL and Government of Mauritius on 4th April 2014 and 7th May 2014 respectively.

The FIBs will be of 14.5 metre long with a maximum speed of 35knots. They can perform day/night patrolling, search and rescue and special forces operations.
