GILGIT: At least one of the two prisoners involved in the Nanga Parbat attack that
killed 10 foreign tourists was shot dead, while the other was injured as police foiled an attempted jailbreak in Gilgit-Balistan (G-B) early Friday morning.
On June 23, 2013, gunmen dressed as paramilitary forces stormed into the Nanga Parbat base camp, killing Chinese and Ukrainian climbers in an unprecedented attack in the Himalaya mountains of G-B region.
Home Secretary Sibtain Ahmed confirmed that the person killed was one of the assailants who had stormed the camp. Two other inmates – one of them also believed to be involved in the Nanga Parbat attack – however, managed to escape from district jail, Gilgit, where the incident occurred at 2.45am.
According to certain reports, the jailbreak was coordinated and assisted by men from outside the jail. However officials rejected this assertion.
Soon after the incident, the inspector general police [IGP] jails suspended four jail officials including a superintendent. The area was soon cordoned off by police and a search operation was started in the area.
A police official requesting anonymity said the deceased inmate was on death row as an Anti-Terrorism Court had convicted him. The case was to be tried in military courts .
According to a press release issued by G-B administration, a high level committee was formed to carry out investigation in the matter.

GILGIT: At least four inmates of Gilgit’s District Jail overnight tried to escape free by breaking the main gate of the premises. Two of them managed to flee; one was killed and the other was arrested in wounded state, SAMAA reported on Friday.
Taking notice of the jailbreak, the police high-ups suspended four jail officials including jail superintendent.
The security forces opened fire at the absconding prisoners, killing one and injuring the other. However, two terrorists managed to break free.
According to the security sources, the incident took place at District Jail Gilgit where four terrorists involved in the killing of 11 people including ten foreign tourists in Nanga Parbat Mountain were kept. These tourists were assassinated on June 24, 2013 in a Nanga Parbat base-camp.
Following the incident, the security forces kick-started search operation in the area.
It should be mentioned here that that it was decided that the terrorists will be tried in a military court established under National Action Plan. –SAMAA
