Some people that live outside the US think Hollywood is a good representation of the entire country, that everyone in this country is rich & beautiful. The reality couldn't be any further than this.
Spending half of my life living in this country, as well as living in third world countries like Pakistan, Nigeria, Ghana; I wanted to give my opinions on the ghetto culture present in this country, & compare it to the slums in third world countries I've seen.
There is a common misperception that the US is an extremely safe country. While it is safe from bombings & terrorism; it is extremely vulnerable to other kinds of violence. Even where I live in New Jersey, Hoboken is a thriving city, & right next to it is Jersey City, a much grittier city. Even though you have the multimillion mansions in Morris County here, you also have the poorest & most dangerous cities of the country in the shape of Camden, Newark & Trenton in New Jersey.
In some places, like New York City, Washington DC, Bridgeport, there are pockets of extremely rich & extremely poor & dangerous areas within that particular city. In cities like Philadelphia, there are more "bad 'pockets' than good ones".
Even though the ghettos of the US look a lot better (aesthetically speaking) than third world countries, I would argue that they are much more dangerous than most. The people in these ghettos might have Plasma TVs in their house, but it is not safe to walk through the neighborhoods during night (or even day). While the people in third world country slums are more peaceful, many people living in the ghettos choose to live that way, smoke crack. Ghetto culture is glorified, people exhibit poor character & moral values in ghettos; whereas in third world slums, people generally have good character, & have a genuine will to uplift themselves.
In every US state I've been to (traveled all over the East & West coast, & most of the Midwest as well), there seem to be lots of ghettos & extremely rundown, unsafe areas within every state. I also had to unfortunately had to live in Irvington & East Orange for a few months (before I moved away), to be closer to my workplace, & it was an extremely dangerous experience for me. It's a shame. While the US ghettos are much more aesthetically pleasing than the third world slums, they seem to be a lot more dangerous, due to the poor character of people, glorifying ghetto character, wanting to live "in the hood", & I feel this is a huge problem this country faces.
I'd like to hear other people's opinions on this.
