After years of neglect, Germany is finally trying to modernize its military. Recent incidents have have shown the deplorable state of the German army, which poses a problem of international credibility to Germany at a time when the country intends to play a greater role in world conflicts. The German Defense Ministry announced that the country will invest up to €6 billion (6.58bn dollars) in the coming years to cope with recurring hardware issues affecting the operation of the military, including helicopters and planes.
According to the German newspaper Der Spiegel, which reveals in its edition of Saturday the existence of the plan, the Ministry of Ursula von der Leyen will implement a package of 120 measures, in particular to strengthen staffing and to increase the number of spare parts. The newspaper also reports of the existence of “many documents” from the Ministry of Defence, showing that these “hardware problems restrict the capabilities” of the Bundeswehr, the German army.
For example, the Department is concerned that problems in the radar system of the Eurofighter or the problems in the NH90 transport helicopter considerably limit their potential involvement in missions. Thus, only 4 of 39 NH90 helicopters are currently available, writes Der Spiegel, citing internal calculations of the ministry.
The German army has suffered in recent months many bad reviews about the quality of its equipment, such as accuracy problems of the assault rifle used by German soldiers, the G36, which has made headlines in the press, before being shelved. Last September, Ms Von der Leyen had already recognized that the Bundeswehr could not ensure all of its engagement vis-à-vis NATO because of equipment problems. Supply faults, spare parts for airplanes and breakdowns affecting marine helicopters are the main cause of this failure.
