Germans voters worry about losing jobs to immigrants

The people of Germany head to the polls on 22 September, with immigration policy becoming an increasingly divisive issue.

When the EU was created, migrants from around the continent moved to the so-called 'power house' of Europe to take advantage of work and education opportunities.

Merkel argues most of these newcomers are skilled and help the German economy stay competitive and grow.

But Germans are increasingly concerned about competition for their jobs, houses and school places and the threat to indigenous culture.

Tanya Beckett reports from Germany.

Their future is pretty bleak. Ultimately, population is power.

Nothing in the article mentions Indians nor Chinese specifically. Besides, degrees from India are not even accepted in many European countries including Germany.

Pffft.... What a bunch of babies. Those Voters probably never went to the Real World (of Employment).

They are accepted worldwide and Indians make up a large percentage of doctors, engineers and finance specialists both in North America and Europe, unlike Pakistanis who work mainly as cab drivers or open small restaurants.

Germans and other Western European people who worry about their jobs are not worried by Indians or Chinese, as the threat to their jobs comes mainly from Eastern European migrants, who are more cheaper to hire. The people who are worried about losing their job have mostly a low-income and are relatively low educated.

98 percent of Indians are counter clerks, sabzi wala, taxi wala, etc only short number is Doctors and engineers

I think Germany has a big Turkish population, which settled in Germany after the war so are they talking about them or about other immigrant like from Asia.

Wrong Indians mainly work as cab drivers especially in NYC and Chicago, in other cities they work in gas stations. Very small percentage of Indians actually work as doctors or engineers. Also, no Indian University degrees are not accepted. That's why you and your daddy both work at a gas station in Toronto.

Wrong. There is no 'guest working' migration anymore to Germany. Big migrational flows happen within the European Union now. The threat comes from cheap Eastern European workers and highly educated/skilled Southern European workers, who find it difficult to get a job in their native countries.

Yes, my friend told me about this but he told me that they only come to the country with limited visa and can only stay for a certain period of time. He was telling me about immigrants from neighboring EU countries that come during summer for seasonal work.

True. Rarely have I ever seen the stereotype of Indians being intelligent professionals proven right. All the time I see them as cab drivers and hotel bellmen, never (not once) doctors or lawyers or CEO's.

Most of the migrants from these countries are involved in high salary job. Only some of them are involved in small paying jobs during their study years. Since people of above two nationalities needs work permit, their work is very well regulated and in control. what is not in control is the people who have work-permit based on their being 2nd and 3rd generation German , EU migrant and have not enough skills.

Also German Govt. started a concept of "mini-jobs or 400 euro jobs" This helped them to remain competitive wrt to other eu countries. These mini jobs were meant for low level jobs. Now (small)company are exploiting these jobs and employ 2-3 people in place of job for one people. Thus 2-3 partime worker earning in place of full time worker.

Now one may ask why don't German do 2-3 these work? The answer is taxation and social benefits. A unemployed German will get 400 euro + house rent cost as an unemployment benefits. so with the mini job, you work and get the same ammount. So why to work?

Not true in Germany. May be in other place like middle east but certainly not in Germany. It depends upon host countries, what they want laborers or Engineers.
