Apparel exporters and workers from 22 factories formed a human chain in front of the Sonargoan hotel in the capital on Monday, demanding the dues worth $ 5 million from Indias Lilliput Kidswear against its import from the Bangladeshi companies.
The protesters held the programme as the Indian commerce ministry officials and Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry leaders were holding a press conference inside the hotel on the occasion of India Show to be held in Dhaka on December 3-5.
Gemini Garments managing director Fazlur Rahman, one of the 22 exporters, told New Age that Indias Lilliput had promised to pay the money in several instalments by January, 2013.
According to a consensus between commerce ministry of India and Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association, we were supposed to get the first instalment of payment in last June, he said, adding that Lilliput did not pay the instalment.
He added that the company had even stopped communicating with them. The exporters said they organised the programme to place their demand to Indian commerce ministry officials and FICCI leaders. We want our money back before the India Show, one of the exporters said.
