* Defence secretary tells Abbottabad Commission countrys strategic interests are in safe hands
Staff Report
ISLAMABAD: Pakistani armed forces are now better prepared to respond to any possible recurrence of Abbottabad Operation as adequate safeguards have been put in place, Defence Secretary Lt Gen (r) Syed Athar Ali said on Saturday.
Giving a detailed briefing to members of the Abbottabad Commission formed to probe the US aggression against Pakistan on May 2 this year to hunt down al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden, the defence secretary maintained that defence forces had taken certain measures to preclude possibility of recurrence of such incidents in future.
The commission held its 4th meeting on Abbottabad Operation with former senior judge of the Supreme Court (SC) Justice Javed Iqbal in the chair, who is heading the commission.
The meeting was also attended by Abbas Khan, a former IG, Ashraf Jahangir Qazi and Lt Gen (r) Nadeem Ahmed.
Athar Ali said the incident had left very deep imprints on the entire Pakistani nation in general and armed forces in particular.
The defence secretary said that unlike an undefended civilian compound, the countrys strategic assets were well protected, and an elaborate defence mechanism had been put in place.
He apprised the commission that none of the governments departments, including Ministry of Defence and Joint Staff Headquarters, had even considered USA or Afghanistan as a direct threat.
He also explained the salient features of Pakistans defence policy and stated it was approved by the Defence Committee of the cabinet, which is headed by Prime Minister of Pakistan.
He said that the countrys defence policy directed Joint Staff Headquarters (JSHQ) to formulate joint strategic directives, which were issued in 2007 after having been extensively debated within the armed forces at JSHQ and acted as a main document for the armed forces for everything, including their composition, structuring, development plans, training, methodology and employment strategy.
He explained that JSD in turn issues specific instructions to the armed forces to prepare for countering the identified threat.
