KARACHI: Florists say that they have made special arrangements this time on 14 February because the Valentine Day sales boom has come after a long spell of low sales.
Khizar Ahmed, a flower shop owner from Karachi told The News that florists have been waiting for a good season owing to the slow down in economy our sales have dropped this year.
He said florists in the city are trying their best to recover their losses that they have incurred in last few weeks owing to low sales. We lost thousands of rupees in last couple of days due to low sales, not to mention big florists who must have lost huge amount of money, he laments.
He also said that this time sales in Muharram have remained low unlike other years, which is also a new concern for florists. This is for the first time in last three years that 14 February is not falling in Muharram, he observed.
Khizar Ahmed claimed that until few days back the wholesale rates of Tube Rose and English Rose was around Rs50 for a bunch 48 pieces.
The same bunch of 48 flowers is now selling for Rs300 to Rs500. Moreover, flowers coming from Punjab are some Rs200 costlier if compared to Karachi.
On Valentines Day one face difficulty in finding varieties of English flowers a single flower stick price rises over five times and sometimes goes to over Rs100, Ahmed added.
We have received orders in bulk well before a week. Much of the orders for Valentines Day come days earlier and sales remain low on the particular day, said another retailer florist from a middle class locality of Karachi.
Cut flowers the local market name for English Rose, Tube Rose, Tulip, Lily and other foreign exotic flowers presented with their stalk in bouquets were previously imported from Thailand but now these are widely cultivated in and around Lahore. Teenhutty is the biggest wholesale flower market of the city.
