India's Defence Research & Development Organisation has just tested the Nirbhay cruise missile for the first time off India's east coast. The 1,000-km range subsonic missile is a two-stage weapon system that has been under development for seven years.

The Nirbhay is understood to be powered by the HAL PTAE-7 turbojet engine, the same that powers the Lakshya-I/II drone.

The Nirbhay will be deployable from land, sea or air.

Livefist: FLASH! India's Nirbhay Cruise Missile Tested

Balasore (Odisha): Taking an important step forward to make its missile arsenal more potent, India on Tuesday test-fired its first indigenously developed sub-sonic cruise missile ‘Nirbhay’ .
Nirbhay (fearless) was test-fired from the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur near here in Balasore district.
The missile, under development since 2007, has a range of 1,000 kms - similar to the US Tomahawk, which flies like an aircraft. It has good loitering capability, control and guidance, a high degree of accuracy in terms of impact and very good stealth features
The missile has been developed by the Aeronautical Development Establishment, a Defence Research and Development Organisation laboratory based at Bangalore.

India's maiden test-firing of Nirbhay subsonic cruise missile has been terminated after 20 minutes into launch.

All systems onboard the missiles performed perfectly for the first 20 minutes. The radars tracking reported good health.
