Srinagar, Dec 11: Panic gripped Bilal Colony at Soura here after fire at a nearby CRPF camp, reportedly caused gas cylinder blasts during the intervening night. The incident left locals in panic and led to protests this morning, with people demanding immediate relocation of the camp.
The camp, situated in the residential area, caught fire that subsequently led to blast of LPG cylinders triggering bangs and panic. Locals said at around 4 am, they heard loud blasts and thought that the CRPF camp has come under some attack. “We initially thought that camp has come under some attack but later we enquired and found that CRPF camp had caught fire. There were apprehensions that if the fire was not doused at earliest, it could have led to heavy damages as the CRPF personnel have dumped their ammunition there,” they said.
During the morning hours, the fire was brought under control by the personnel of Fire and Emergency Services department. However, locals this morning held a protest demonstration outside the camp demanding its immediate relocation.
“We have time and again demanded that the camp be shifted from the residential area as it is a source of inconvenience for locals,” said an office bearer of Bilal Colony Masjid Committee.
Local have also written to the Divisional Commissioner Kashmir and Deputy Commissioner Srinagar to get the camp relocated. A police official told Greater Kashmir they visited the spot and pacified the protestors.
“The fire had occurred in Kitchen area of the camp, however there were no casualties. Our team visited the spot in the morning and there some people demanding relocation of the camp. We listened to their demanded and assured them that the matter will be taken up with higher authorities,” the official said. When contacted, PRO CRPF, Kishore Prasad, said: “I am not aware of any fire incident.”
