RAWALPINDI: In order to bring former president General Pervez Musharraf back to the country in connection to the Benazir Bhutto assassination case, the Federal Investigation Agency’s (FIA) joint investigation team has compiled a file containing further evidences against him.
The file is expected to be sent to the Interpol Headquarters next week.
Interpol had earlier refused to arrest and hand Musharraf over to Pakistan, citing a lack of evidence against him in the case.
The contents of the file include the FIR lodged in the case, statements of former DG IB Brig (retd) Aijaz Shah, former interior ministry spokesperson Brig (retd) Javed Iqbal Cheema and police officers against Musharraf, copies of US journalist Mark Segal’s statement and the court’s verdict which terms Musharraf an offender and a fugitive.
In the event that Interpol still refuses to arrest Musharraf, the FIA joint investigation team will start proceedings in his absence.
The senior prosecutor in the case, Chaudhry Zulfiqar Ali told Roznama Express that according to the Anti-terrorism Act Section 11 (L), proceedings can be initiated against an escaped convict despite his absence, and that a plea would be filed in court in this regard.
