ISLAMABAD: The federal government has planned to spend Rs 4.6 billion on the Information Technology (IT) sector to execute around 43 projects during this fiscal year to achieve better results.
These projects, costing more than Rs 22 billion are meant for human resource development, development of IT industry, strengthening e-Government and infrastructure development.
An official source on Tuesday said in human resource development area, the national ICT scholarship programme would continue to provide scholarship to 400 students from remote areas for four-year Bachelor degree in various national universities.
The National ICT Research and Development Fund has been given target with objectives to enable innovation and creativity amongst students and help in creating linkages between academia-industry-government.
He said the scholarship programme is extended to provide opportunity to students who could not benefit from it in fall 2011 semester and added for year 2011 (extended spring 2012) there will be no ICT Scholarship award test.
So far more than 1,900 fully funded scholarships worth up to Rs 1.8 billion awarded to students from rural and non-metropolitan areas. More than 2,500 teachers have been trained to prepare their students for taking entrance exam of the participating universities while around 36,000 students have been trained with a view to bring them at par with their competitors from metropolitan and urban areas.
He said standardisation of Pakistani software industry on CMMI would facilitate in improving the process within the companies by adopting internationally accepted best practices and thus attracting international business while Open Source Resource Centre would keep on acting as a hub of technologies for IT professionals and companies.
In e-government area, projects will continue to be the centerpiece of public sector IT initiative.
He said these projects include establishment of Federal Government Data Centre to provide physical infrastructure facility for hosting the applications and data service for public sector at federal government level.
The other project is Machine Readable Passport and Machine Readable Visa Project Phase-II as the system would be deployed at key foreign missions this year while National Response Centre for Cyber Crimes Phase-II plans to establish new forensic facilities at Peshawar and Quetta and inform public about the cyber crimes benefits of forensic facilities.
