ISLAMABAD, March 11: PPP’s senior vice-chairman Makhdoom Amin Fahim sent a legal notice on Tuesday to PML-N’s MNA-elect Khwaja Mohammad Asif demanding a “complete retraction and withdrawal” of a “defamatory statement” about his alleged contacts with President Pervez Musharraf.

The notice was sent on the day newspapers published a statement of Khwaja Asif that the Pakistan Muslim League-N had serious ‘reservations’ over the candidature of Mr Fahim for the post of prime minister “due to his constant contacts” with the president.

Meanwhile, sources in the Pakistan People’s Party said Mr Fahim and party co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari were likely to meet at a dinner on Wednesday to resolve their differences over the choice of a candidate for the prime minister’s post.

The notice sent through the Hafeez Pirzada Law Associates said Mr Fahim’s loyalty to the PPP was “beyond any shadow or iota of doubt” and that, in the past, he had “declined several offers” of the office of prime minister. “It is most unfortunate that you gave a highly controversial and contentious political interview” to a TV channel which was carried by all major newspapers of the country on Tuesday. “In the interview, you cast serious aspersions on the propriety and integrity of Makhdoom Sahib knowing well that the said interview was baseless and false.

“Makhdoom Sahib believes that the interview was given by you with ulterior motives and in order to defame and vilify his person and good name which is tantamount to subversion of the free exercise of right of the newly-elected members of the National Assembly of Pakistan in the matter of electing the prime minister.

“Makhdoom Sahib did not (repeat did not) meet President Pervez Musharraf on the day of assassination of late Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto. On the contrary, he remained with her throughout the day, and in the morning he accompanied her to visit and meet Afghan President Hamid Karzai and, thereafter, went with her to the ill-fated public meeting at Liaquat Bagh and was with her in the vehicle when the dastardly attack was made on her which resulted in her Shahadat. Makhdoom Sahib remained with her dead body and travelled in the same plane and helicopter to the place of her burial.”

Mr Fahim, it said, had already clarified that his meetings with President Musharraf were with the “concurrence, knowledge and approval” of late Ms Bhutto and Mr Zardari was “aware of all meetings”.

It asked the PML-N leader to “make immediate amends and atonement and issue, as prominently as your offensive and harmful statement, a complete retraction and withdrawal of the said allegations and statements within 24 hours of the receipt of this notice, failing which Makhdoom Sahib will have no option but to institute proceedings against you in accordance with law, so as to vindicate his good name and reputation.”

When contacted, Khwaja Asif said he had not received any notice so far.

The PPP came out with a brief statement on the issue with party spokesman Farhatullah Babar describing the PML-N leader’s remarks “uncalled for”.

PPP MEETING: Mr Zardari, meanwhile, continued consultative meetings with the party’s elected legislators on the nomination of the candidate for the post of prime minister and met members from Lahore, Gujranwala and Multan regions. According to Mr Babar, the meeting was the last in the series.

He said the co-chairman briefed the members on the issues involved in the selection of the nominee and sought suggestions on the development needs of their areas.

The participants authorised Mr Zardari to take an appropriate decision in the best interest of the party and the country.

Sources said some MNAs-elect asked Mr Zardari to assume the office of prime minister.
