Expo Pakistan to fetch more orders than last year
KARACHI: Expo Pakistan 2010 was formally opened at Karachi Expo Centre on Friday morning amid tight security with more than 350 exhibitors displaying a wide variety of products in five halls.
Chief Executive Trade Development Authority (TDAP), Syed Mohibullah Shah inaugurated the exhibition along with president FPCCI, Sultan Chawla and president KCCI, Abdul Majid Haji Mohammad.
Speaking on the occasion, he said Expo Pakistan had fetched on the spot export orders worth $40 million in the last Expo. This year, we will get more than double as compared to last year, he added.
He pointed out that Expo Pakistan 2010 has new products and new buyers from non-traditional markets. For the first time ever, handicraft products are on display at the Expo Pakistan. Similarly, engineering and chemical products and food items are also included this year, he noted. He said occupancy is 100 percent this time. And amazingly for the first time, buyers from Yemen, Azerbaijan, and Germany are visiting Expo Pakistan.
Shah said a large number of foreign buyers (500) from 50 countries have arrived here to witness the mega event despite the negative propaganda in the international media. This shows that Karachi is safe for foreign visitors and it has a business friendly atmosphere, he said.
He said that foreign buyers have told him that they were not scared about the law and order situation and in fact they are enjoying the weather in Karachi. TDAP chief said for the first time in 60 years, Pakistans exports to Asian countries have grown tremendously due to economic slowdown in the west. FPCCI president, Sultan Chawla said Pakistans image has improved due to successful holding of Expo Pakistan this year as large number of foreign buyers has arrived here. President KCCI, Abdul Majid Haji Mohammad said a large number of exhibitors are showing their products at the Expo this year. He pointed out that there was a high demand for stalls, but the entire space of 6,000 square meters was booked. Main sponsor of the Expo Pakistan and the project manager of Ras Al Khaimah Free Trade Zone, Ghanem Salem Ghanem said the Expo Pakistan will be very successful and exhibiters will get substantial orders. I am, for the first time, visiting Pakistan and I see no security threats here. The security is very good and fool proof. Everything is OK here. Hiro Takahashi, President and CEO of DTS Inc, Japan said. He was a little scared before coming to Pakistan. But I dont see any threat because the security is very good here, he added.
Head of Bangladesh trade delegation and chairman Alif Group of Companies, Kamaluddin Ahmed said this exhibition is quite large as compared to last Expo. There are new products on display this year. He said 20 buyers from Bangladesh arrived in the this year. Head of Dutch delegation and director Royal Textile B.V., Jameel Ahmed appreciated the exhibition and suggested to restrict free export of yarn to enable local industry to get sufficient raw material for textile value added sector. staff report
