[Pakistan Observer]
Saturday, March 16, 2013 - General (Rtd) Moinuddin Haider, former interior minister and ex-governor of Sindh, has said that the terrorists cannot operate with their nefarious designs in Pakistan without foreign funds, intelligence and technical assistance.
Speaking at a pre-election awareness campaign organized by Shura Hamdard the former home minister added that the terrorists were not illiterate, they knew the importance of strategic weapons such as AWACS and places like Kamra base Sargodha, Mehran Navel base Karachi, and Navel College Lahore and thats why they attacked them in order to make Pakistan a failed state, to break the will of government and the confidence of Pakistani people they had in their state. They were being provided with intelligence and funds by the foreign opponent powers, otherwise they would have not been successful in their sabotaging activities because it required skilful networking, he added.
Our rulers have no political will and adequate counter insurgency plan to deal with terrorism while police moral is down and they are reluctant to take action and thats why the situation of Karachi is now slipped out of the hands of police. He said that the laws pertaining to deal with of terrorists had now become outdated and needed to be changed. Courts needed 200 per cent evidences and without witness persons who committed 50 to 100 murders were released on bails.
There are 35 districts in Balochistan and only 5 are affected by the terrorist activities and the whole Pushtoon belt is at peace. Balochistan has a bright future, universities are running there and a large number of students, including 18 per cent female, have enrolled there. Many good works are being done there but they are not reported in press, he said, adding there is no comparison, whatsoever, between Balochistan and East Pakistan.
All members of Balochistan Assembly were provided with a large amount of Rs. 300 million annually, but they did not do any development work in their respective areas. Quetta would have become a new and a bright city if 180 million rupees were spent on it, he added. He said during his tenure, as a federal interior minister, he didnt issue even a single weapon licence, but the present interior minister had given seventy thousands weapon licences on political consideration Seaking on the occasion Mahdi Masud, former ambassador of Pakistan said that if Pakistan, for God sake, were damaged then people of all provinces and areas, Kashmir cause and Islamic cause would suffer and the sacrifices made by the Muslims of subcontinent for the creation of Pakistan would also go in vain. Senator Abdul Haseeb Khan said that the problem of law and order could be resolved if we started to act according to the ideals of Quaid-i-Azam, pay attention on mass education and behave like a united nation.
Haq Nawaz Akhtar, former chairman, Pakistan Steel Mills was of the view that it was necessary that the voters of Pakistan be made aware of the importance and value of their votes that could bring change, progress and prosperity in the country, if used for the election of honest and sagacious candidates.
