Ever expanding, deepening relations with Turkey
Thursday, January 30, 2014 - High level periodic visits and ongoing cooperation in different fields between Pakistan and Turkey are the hall mark of friendship between the two Islamic countries. Commander of the Turkish Air Force General Akyn Ozturk is now on a visit to exchange views with his Pakistani counterpart and other leadership to further boost the already cooperative relationship between the defence forces.
Talking to the Turkish Commander who was also conferred the Award of Nishan-i- Imtiaz on Tuesday, President Mamnoon Hussain said Pakistan is keen to further strengthen trade, investment and defence relations with Turkey. The fact is that a huge potential exists to boost and deepen the expanding partnership between the two countries. During the visit of Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan in December last year both the countries signed a number of agreements that would certainly go a long way in meeting Pakistan’s critical needs particularly in energy and infrastructure fields. The expected signing of the Preferential Trade Agreement in the first quarter of this year and the operationalization of the Islamabad-Tehran-Istanbul ECO container train would significantly contribute towards facilitating trade between the two countries. The political relations, which had been very cordial since the establishment of Pakistan, are gaining strength to achieve the desired objectives. Pakistan has offered to facilitate Turkish private sector investment in key sectors of energy, especially coal, hydroelectric and wind, infrastructure including motorways, roads, airports, low cost housing and urban development, municipal services like public transport and solid waste management. Thus there are a host of fields where bilateral cooperation could be further boosted as Turkey has the expertise and resources to assist Pakistan. Turkey in fact has emerged as a role model for development due to its sound policies and we are confident that the bilateral visits and understandings in every sphere from political to economic and defence sectors would lead to further deepening of relations between the two countries.
