Eurojet offers South Korea EJ200 to power future fighter

Eurojet has offered Seoul its EJ200 turbofan engine to power the Republic of Korea Air Force's (RoKAF's) proposed fifth-generation fighter aircraft, known as KFX.

The offer was submitted to South Korea's Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) earlier this year in response to a request for information (RfI).

Paul Herrmann, business development executive at Eurojet, told Jane's on 19 October that the company's offer features a proposed industrial collaboration programme under which local industry in South Korea would licence manufacture the majority of components and systems for the engine, which is also used to power the Eurofighter Typhoon: a platform that is being considered by DAPA to meet the third phase of the RoKAF's next-generation (FX-III) fighter aircraft requirement.

Herrmann confirmed that the plan outlines a technology transfer programme to enable South Korean industry to manufacture 60 per cent of the EJ200 engine for the KFX, although details have yet to be established.

Product details
The EUROJET EJ200 is a collaborative engine between Rolls-Royce, MTU, Avio and ITP.

Thrust range from 13,500lbf dry to 20,000lbf with reheat
Europe's leading combat engine
Ideal candidate engine for new military aircraft market and for re-engining existing fighters

The EJ200 is a twin shaft reheated turbofan, with three low pressure (LP) and five high pressure (HP) compressor stages, powered by two single-stage turbines (LP and HP). The combustor is annular with airspray injectors. The engine reheat system features a three-stage manifold system and a convergent/divergent nozzle. Engine control is by an integrated Full Authority Digital Engine Control (FADEC) system.

The technology of the EJ200 engine makes it both smaller and simpler in layout than current powerplants of a similar thrust class while giving it lower fuel consumption and an unprecedented power-to-weight ratio - all vital factors in enhancing the multi-mission performance and effectiveness of combat aircraft.

EJ200's design emerged in the late 1980s following the formation of EUROJET Turbo GmbH in 1986 to co-ordinate and manage the project. EUROJET's partner companies are Rolls-Royce, Avio of Italy, MTU of Germany and ITP of Spain.

Among the most advanced features of the EJ200 are a fan design that gives high stability without IGVs, the application of blisks, wide-chord aerofoils, single crystal blades, an airspray combustion system, and an integral FADEC providing low pilot workload and comprehensive fleet management capability.

The first series production Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft were flown in February 2003 and during service, EJ200 will match, or exceed, the most demanding international standards for operational support required by the US, Europe and other International customers.
