MULTAN:

Multan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) President Khawaja Jalaluddin Roomi said on Saturday that the present government should develop a special economic zone in southern Punjab under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor.

Roomi said that since Multan is the hub of trade in the province, priority should be given to the city for the establishment of a special economic zone. “It is a known fact that southern Punjab, including Multan, has tremendous potential for viable industrial investment for many reasons, thus providing opportunities for economic growth and industrial development in this area,” he said.

“There are thousands of power looms, more than 200 value added units and hundreds of large and small scale industries producing a wide range of products currently operating in the cities of Multan, Bahawalpur, Dera Ghazi Khan, Muzaffargarh and Rahim Yar Khan,” he added.

The MCCI president also said other parts of southern Punjab were contributing towards a major portion of the federal government’s revenue collection and providing employment to thousands of workers.

Furthermore, he added that the region consists of many other facilities like cotton research institute, Punjab cotton centre, soil testing laboratory, mango pulp plant and agricultural university.
