Economic gap between East and West Pakistan in 1960s is often cited as a key reason for the secessionist movement led by Shaikh Mujib's Awami League and the creation of Bangladesh in 1971. This disparity has grown over the last 40 years, and the per capita income in Pakistan now stands at 1.7 times Bangladesh's in 2011, slightly higher than 1.6 as it was in 1971.

Forty years after the Fall of Dhaka and the creation of Bangladesh on Dec 16, 1971, there's still much talk about it. The Daily Star, a Bangladeshi newspaper, has published a piece on the subject by Akbar Ali Khan marking the 40th anniversary of Bangladeshi independence. In his Op ED, Mr. Khan argues that "political independence provided much more conducive environment for growth in Bangladesh than united Pakistan. Though economic growth in East Pakistan was revived during Ayub Khan's so-called decade of reforms, growth rate in erstwhile East Pakistan was much lower than that of West Pakistan".

In his zeal to rationalize independence based on the economic argument, Mr. Khan has clearly ignored the following facts:

1. In 1969-70, the ratio of per capita incomes between West and East Pakistan was 1.6, as detailed by Mr. Khan. In 2011, however, this ratio has increased to 1.7, according to the IMF data.

2. Bangladesh is still categorized by the World Bank among low income and least developed countries of the world, while Pakistan is a middle income country and classified well above the list of least developed countries of the world.

3. Bangladesh is ranked as 11th poorest country in the world by the World Bank in terms of the percentage of population living on $1.25 or less a day. Neighboring India is the 14th poorest on this list, while Pakistan does not show up on it. The rest of the nations on this list are all in sub-Saharan Africa.

3. In 1947, East Pakistan started with a lower economic base than West Pakistan, and the loss of its Hindu Bengali business elite in 1947 left it worse off. It also didn't have the benefit of the large number of Muslim businessmen who migrated to West Pakistan, particularly Karachi, after partition of India in 1947.

4. Pakistani economist Dr. Ishrat Husain explains it well when he says that "although East Pakistan benefited from Ayub’s economic reforms in 1960s, the fact that these benefits were perceived as a dispensation from a quasi-colonial military regime to its colony—East Pakistan—proved to be lethal."

It must, however, be acknowledged that Bangladeshi economy has been outperforming Pakistan's in the last few years, particularly since President Musharraf's departure in 2008. Bangladesh has also made significant strides on various social indicators and it now ranks just one notch below Pakistan on human development index 2011. Bangladesh's family planning efforts have been remarkably successful in lowering the fertility rate of Bangladeshi women, an area where Pakistan significantly lags behind the rest of South Asia.

Brother Bangladesh is still a young nation, thread starter and writer of this article conveniently ignores the fact that it was not Bangladesh but pakistan carved out of India.

That's why Bengali people have not visioned their nation, economy and servility separately as a independent nation.

Bengali people have fought for pakistan and worked hard to make pakistan a good nation but as they were jolted to reality of harsh treatment, racism and genocide they were forced to look for independence.

It was to save Bengali people from genocide to save Bengali pride and their culture.

Economy was never on their mind as they were loyal to pakistan because it was pakistan a nation for which they have sacrifices everything it was not a economic matter for them as they were not selfish people.

It takes very long to repair and stand on its feets but Bangladesh is doing absolutely fine though not to its true potential.

With GDP growth rate of 5.8% Bangladesh is growing faster then pakistan and soon it will surpass pakistan in the size of economy.

Best of luck Bangladesh.

BD scores better in human dev than other S Asian nations: Amartya

NEW DELHI, Dec 17 (agencies): Bangladesh, along with Nepal and Bhutan, has scored better than other South Asian countries in areas of human development.

Nobel Laureate and noted economist Amartya Sen said on Friday, while addressing Delhi Economics Conclave organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), that India's track record of dealing with the human development issues is worse than neighbours like Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan.

Prof Sen expressed his views at the Economics Conclave in favour of balanced liberalisation and economic reforms.

"I do not think that there is any conflict in liberalisation .... Each time you have to see if it is doing good for the people or not," he said.

Laying stress on economic reforms, he said they were not just about doing enough to address issues which were of great importance to those who relatively prospered. The formula that worked only for 20 per cent of the people of the country is not right, he added.

Commenting on the challenges being faced by the government of India at present, he said :"In a democracy, you have to carry the party, the coalition and the political system, including the opposition with you".

"The tragedy is that not only China, but even Bangladesh is now doing better on almost every one of these social indicators than India is doing .... Every country Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh are ahead already," Professor Sen said.

"We (India) need to maintain economic growth as growth generates public revenue and with public revenue we need to do things such as health care, immunisation, education...the government has to do a lot more," he added.

Professor Sen said that among the six South Asian countries, India has slipped to fifth position from second in 1990 on parameters like education, life expectancy, immunisation, maternal mortality, etc.

Only Pakistan is below India on human development index, he said, adding that "because...(it has) its own problems connected to terrorism".

India has higher percentage of child under-nourishment than any other country in the world, even in Africa, Prof. Sen added.

Bangladesh just celebrated its 40th birthday.

Considering the political difficulties and potential instability, corruption, limited resources, and other hindrance factors, it has done very well.

Although, we could have done a lot better.

Today, there was violent infighting in Motijheel. People died...
