ECNEC approves projects worth Rs250bn

ISLAMABAD: Economic Coordination Nation Executive Committee (ECNEC) approved 20 mega developmental projects including 16 projects related to the water-sector worth Rs250 billion in it’s meeting here Thursday.

Briefing the media Federal Minister for Information & Broadcasting Qamar-uz-Zaman Kaira emphasized that the ECNEC prioritized the problems of the smaller provinces and approved Rs800 million for Balochistan, Rs700 million for NWFP and Rs500 million each for Punjab and Sindh for developmental projects.

The federal minister said the ECNEC meeting also approved Rs10.75 billion for ‘Piyara Kashmir’ project and under this project developmental projects will be initiated in the border areas of Kashmir.

Ten Dams will be constructed in the country at a cost of Rs57 billion and in the fiscal year 2009-10 Rs2.5 billion have been allocated in this respect, said Kaira adding that these dams will minimise the wastage of water.

Kaira further informed that construction on Jhelum and Kabul Dams has already been initiated and ECNEC has allocated Rs1.89 billion for the construction of ‘Sukkur Barrage,’ adding that Pakistan will not comprise on its share of water with India.

ECNEC also approved Karachi Circular Railway Project with a worth of Rs128 billion. Rs15.9 billion have been allocated to make Pakistan Railways a profitable Institution, the minister said.

Responding to a query, Kaira said the country could not afford any sort of confrontational politics at this juncture of time, therefore in the constitutional reforms committee headed by Raza Rabbani, four members of the PML-N were included to address the constitutional crisis with mutual consultation of all the political parties of the country.—Online
