Driving on the right or left of the road

Ever wondered why is it that in some countries we drive on the left of the road while in others it is the opposite ?

The motor car is a relatively recent invention, surely it could have been streamlined. More so considering that this comodity is exported all over, it would have been prudent for all of us to drive on the same side of the road.

Wonder why ..?

Or why all countries cannot have the same power sockets.

its simple.. in UK they had carriages on the roads for centuries before the cars came. so they used to keep to the left as they slung their sword on the left hip and it would be easy to draw it from the scabbard with the right hand and attack the enemy on the right side of the road.
In US, they already had pistols , and the american kept to the right as the holsters were on the right hip so it was quicker to draw the pistol, and fire to the left side.

I think driving on the left side is a colonial thing.

The Brits did everything hatke.

Their bikes have gears on the right and the brake on the left as well.
